Hi - I haven't been on this section for a while! Jocelyn and Valjoy, hello! I've been gluten free for about 5 years now - and my fibromyalgia muscle pain is completely gone! My pain issues now are due to old back injuries, and I guess aging joints are starting to act up. That flu-like aching and stiffness that I woke up with every day and the shoulder, neck and back aching (diagnosed as fibro) is gone.

Wanted to note that I read that many people with celiac disease/gluten intolerance are also lactose intolerant. Now that my diet is cleaned up, I don't tolerate a glass of milk very well either, but I can have a little - a bit of sour cream doesn't bother me.

I also read that diabetes runs in famlies along with celiac disease. My blood glucose was always right around 100, but when I took Cymbalta, it started to rise - one of the reasons I quit that drug! There is diabetes in my family. After being gluten free for a couple years, I got lots of bloodwork done - and my glucose level was around 80 - the lowest I ever remember, and all my other bloodwork problems had improved too. Yet i had been eating all the sugar I wanted!

I was confused about the dextrose sugar you were talking about - so here is what I got from "Wise Geek." Dextrose is basically the same as glucose. This explains a little more about the different types of sugar. I use organic honey a lot, and have also started using agave - it is a nice light sweetener, good for tea. I just got some stevia which is supposed to be much better than regular sugar - but have not used it yet. I recently read the dried leaves are the best form to use. Here's the article on sugars:

"Dextrose, fructose, and glucose are all monosaccharides, known as simple sugars. These sugars can combine to form more complex sugars, including the disaccharide known as sucrose, or table sugar. The primary differences between these sugars have to do with the ways in which they are metabolized by the body, and they all play important roles in body function.

Fructose is an extremely sweet sugar which is found in many fruits. The flavor is sometimes intensely cloying, as anyone who has eaten an overripe piece of fruit knows, and it is believed to be the most sweet of the naturally occurring sugars. Fructose can also be obtained through the breakdown of sucrose, which is made from linked fructose and glucose molecules. Fructose has a low glycemic index, which means that it takes a long time for the body to break down, resulting in a slow release of sugar, rather than a sudden rush. For this reason, it is sometimes recommended for diabetics.

Dextrose is simply a form of glucose. Some food packagers like to use "dextrose" on their packaging instead of "glucose" because they believe that people have negative associations with glucose. This sugar is extremely abundant in nature, and it can be found in numerous plant and animal tissues, often along with other sugars such as fructose. The body relies on glucose for energy, using this sugar to power cells. When people measure their blood sugar, they are actually measuring the amount of dissolved glucose in the blood.

The molecular formula for glucose/dextrose and fructose is actually the same. Both sugars are considered to be hexoses, meaning that they have six carbon atoms attached to 12 hydrogen atoms and six oxygen atoms. The differing ways in which molecules can be attached cause various hexoses to behave differently, creating different chemical compounds which lend the hexoses some distinct properties.

Glucose is what is known as an aldohexose, meaning that it contains a compound called an aldehyde, located at the first position in the molecule. Aldehydes have a carbon atom which is attached to a hydrogen atom and also double bonded to an oxygen atom. Fructose, on the other hand, is a ketohexose, containing a ketone which consists of a single carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen atom. The ketone in fructose is attached to the second position in the molecule. Ketones play an important role in biochemistry.

The simple structures of these sugars allow them to be linked in a number of different ways to other molecules, creating more complex sugars which will behave differently in the body and generating some extremely unwieldy chemical formulas. For consumers, the important thing to remember is that labels which say "dextrose" really mean "glucose."

Thanks so much :) I am looking into what is in some of the cerals that are gluten free, but not sugar free :) I'm trying to lose some weight at the same time eat well.

Since you've only been gluten free for a few weeks, give it some time. If you have a gluten sensitivity, then as you avoid gluten, your gut will heal, you'll be able to absorb nutrients properly and you won't feel hungry. (If you have celiac disease, which inflames the small intestine, it takes about 3-4 months of strict gluten free diet to heal.) The weight will start to come off. At least, that's what happened for me. Also, I quit the antidepressants - they were making me gain weight.

I am starting to lose a little weight. I've lost about 5 lbs. Very slowly, but as long as it goes down that is the main thing.

Hey, good news! 5 lbs is good! Just hang in there. It comes off slowly, but it does come off once you get your diet straightened out. I think when you are able to absorb the nutrients you need, you just won't be too hungry either. Do you take vitamin and mineral supplements?

Hi January,

I must drive you crazy talking about the Gluten Free, Allergy Free Food lifestyle changes that I have made, but it is exciting to talk about something positive for a change. So far I have lost 6 lbs. which is great since I put on so much weight being so immobile over the last few years. I am still working with a PT and am walking which is painful for my feet and lower back, but I am doing it. Today I rode a bicycle for the first time in years, with my 6 yr. old Grandson. It was so much fun and was actually less stressful on my body than walking. I will continue to do both. Tonight I am feeling some soreness from riding the bike, which I expected, but I am hopeful that the soreness will not last for long.

I am sticky to my eating change because it is definitely better for my overall health.

Jocelyn - So glad it is working well for you! It really helped me too! I gained weight on the fibro drugs - and I had bad side effects too. I think they are just not right for gluten - intolerant folks. (Just a thought.)

If the gluten free quits working, you may find that as your body clears out the toxins, you find other things bother you also. I've discovered that some kinds of milk bother me, and also just figured out I am allergic to oatmeal (which is in many gluten free products). It's a learning process.

Someone just posted today in the general discussion about an Alcat test - a blood test that tells you what foods you're sensitive too. Might be worth a try?

Hang in there! It took me a year to lose the fibro muscle pain, but I did!

I'm not sure if it were you are someone else on this post that ask me about the protein product that gave me energy.

It is called Whey Protein. The reason I stopped using it is because it is not gluten free and it contains soy. It also has a lot of other ingredients that I wouldn't dare eat today. I am still on a gluten free diet. Although I did cheat on this Memorial Day weekend. I hope I don't pay too high of a price, but I am back on it today.

I have been swimming for the first time this year. I am very sore, but not in extreme pain. More like the sore of lazy muscles being used for the first time since last summer! I am hoping that is all that develops. As we all know, it can take up to 3 days before the total pain sets in. My fingers and hands are a little swollen at this point, but not bad. However, I have to go to work tomorrow, so that might not be too good. But...I am going to push on and on. I have too, or I will never move!!
