How to find a supportive doctor?
torinado - April 28

After years of wondering why I always have these aches and pains, and doctors telling me "you're young, you're fine," I've found that fibromyalgia matches my symptoms most closely. I went to a rheumatologist who was very condescending, did a couple of those pressure tests, and when they came up with no pain she told me she didn't want to do any more tests 'cause I was young, looked at me like I was an idiot, and told me I didn't have fibromyalgia. I went down the elevator fighting tears. I want relief!!
Even if I don't have fibromyalgia, I HAVE to have something related to it. They symptoms match so closely!
My point here is that I want to find a doctor who will work with me to figure out what it is, not matter WHAT it is!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for doctors in the San Francisco Bay Area?? Or some website where I can look?

Contact one of your local Fibromyalgia support groups and I am sure that they can direct you to doctors that can help.

Try Google - enter Fibromyalgia support group and the name of your city to see what pops up. You could also call your local hospital and ask them for a referral to a rhuemotologist that treats fibromyalgia. Good luck.

Here is the link to the National Fibromyalga Association page that lists support groups by state;

Whether you are newly diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome or Unrelenting Fatigue or are researching your symptoms, the selection process for a physician can be a struggle. Most traditional health care providers don't understand or know enough about these very complex diseases. At Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Centers their highly trained physicians are specialized and committed to individualized treatments for positive outcomes. Here are some questions to ask if you are currently seeing a physician or specialist for Fibromyalgia (FM), Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) or Unrelenting Fatigue (UF);------------------------------------
Does your doctor believe that FM, CFIDS and UF are prevalent chronic diseases? -------------------------------------------------
Does your doctor see a significant number of FM, CFIDS or UF patients? --------------------------------
your doctor see marked improvement in those patients by using outcome tracking and monitoring? --------------------------------
Is your doctor open minded about treatment options other than prescriptions? ----------------------------------------------
Does your doctor rule out that your symptoms are related to menstruation, pregnancy, menopause or psychological problems? --------------------------------------
Does your doctor think he can treat your disease? ----------------------------------------------
Can your doctor specify how long it will take for you to feel improvement? -------------------------------
you answered "no" to any of these questions, your current physician may not be your solution. Of course, these few questions are just the beginning of the solution. Your trust and confidence in any physicians' abilities are paramount to success. The fibro and Fatigue centers may have a location near you. You can call their toll-free 1-866-443-4276 for info and check out their web site at to see if the have a location near you. FFC were founded on the belief that no one should endure sustained suffering when help is available. If the nearest FFC is a distance away, they offer affordable and flexible treatment for out of town patients. Good luck!

Larry it is hard to trust any info you give cuz it is a non-stop running advertisement for the fibro and fatigue centers. Little original thought or substantiative data just massive cut/pastes from their internet site. IMHO you are hurting rather than helping the credibililty of the centers which is very sad for them to have such a damaging supporter.

Imelda - May 1

skidoo you are WEIRD... do you ever have anything POSITIVE to say???

Imelda - May 1

P.S. Skidoo, I have never seen you post a single personal or supportive comment to anyone ever! The only reason you come here is to bash the Fibro Centres. Why? And what is YOUR agenda? If you have nothing genuine or kind to contribute... take a hike!
